One on One Sports Performance is a functional strength and conditioning and athletic training program designed to evaluate an athlete’s   functional human movement, detect and correct muscle imbalances, and learn how to build a solid, well balanced foundation of strength and proper postural alignment.  Once an athlete builds a strong base he or she can learn to develop the greater strength and power necessary to produce speed and the explosive movements used in their sports activity.

Each Athlete is given a sports performance evaluation which includes a Functional Movement Screen (FMS), a musculoskeletal exam and baseline testing in several different performance criteria as well as body composition.  Athletes are grouped into a specific level according to their performance and musculoskeletal evaluation, their sport and their activity level.  A maximum of 3-4 athletes are assigned to a group of the same level, which will follow a structured strength and conditioning program, developed specific to improving the muscle imbalances discovered on their evaluation, the athletes goals and their sport/activity.  The athlete is also asked to perform a home exercise routine which consists of the exercises necessary to correct any poor movement patterns.  Athletes are given a set of requirements to benefit their training experience including proper nutrition and rest.

One On One Sports Performance Training is not your average strength and conditioning program.  Unlike traditional gym routines and bodybuilding routines, this program is based on the functional training model designed to improve movement patterns that we use everyday in sport and in life.  Athletes will learn exercises to develop a foundation of core strength and stability and then learn how to strengthen specific movement patterns using various methods of resistance training including dumbbells, medicine balls, resistance bands, kettle bells and bodyweight.  Athletes will be taught to train like an athlete, not a bodybuilder.  Athletes will train to get strong. Athletes will train to become more powerful and more explosive.  They will be taught a proper dynamic warm up, correct running and sprint mechanics, and proper agility and deceleration techniques.  They will also understand speed strength exercises designed to improve acceleration and overall speed, after-all an athlete must be strong to be fast.  Athletes will gain knowledge about proper training and conditioning and living an overall healthy lifestyle including learning life lessons and building self esteem and self confidence.

One On One Sports Performance is different than most training programs in that it is designed and implemented by Sports Physical Therapists along with Strength and Conditioning/ Performance Enhancement Specialists.  Each program starts with an evaluation of the athlete’s functional movement, their flexibility and strength, core strength, body composition and athletic performance profile.  As Sports Physical Therapists first, the training staff understands human movement.  One must understand how the body works in the movement patterns that an athlete performs on the field or court.  Athletes, along with normal healthy individuals and weekend warriors need to be trained in movements that they will use in sports and in life activities. A lot of trainers know what muscles do in isolation, but do not know enough about how the muscles work functionally during movement.  Furthermore most trainers are unable to detect muscular dysfunctions and faulty movement patterns that only qualified professionals are able to identify.  If an athlete has musculoskeletal dysfunctions and is trained improperly, they could actually be strengthening deficient movement patterns which can lead to poor athletic performance and actually increase their risk of injury.   Athletes of the One On One program are taught the necessary corrective exercises to improve any poor alignment or poor movement patterns that were observed during their evaluation.   Once an athlete displays good body awareness, increased core strength, improved postural alignment, and better movement quality, he or she can build continued strength and power on a newly built foundation.  Our staff also understands athletic injuries.  If an athlete suffers an injury in a sport or has any unexplained pain, our staff knows how to deal with these situations and will modify programs accordingly. They may need to refer them to our physical therapists on site who will explain to the athlete what they need to do to rehab the injury, so they can return to their sport or training program as quickly and safely as possible.

One On One Sports Performance is a private training facility equipped with all the necessary tools to train athletes in a functional setting.  The 2000 sq ft training studio has a designated strength and conditioning area in addition to sufficient space for speed and agility training and sport specific instruction.  The facility shares space with One On One Physical Therapy and Sports Rehabilitation in case an athlete needs further evaluation by a physical therapist or treatment of an injury.

The One On One Sports Performance program is an intense, structured program that focuses on developing the young athlete’s body as they grow and mature and prepare for the rigors of their sport.  This program is for the athlete who is serious about strength and conditioning, dedicated to correcting imbalances and faulty movement patterns          (which takes time), interested in learning new and proper training techniques, motivated to exercise and committed to the hard work necessary to maximize their athletic potential.

Each athletes training program will consist of strength days and speed and agility days.  An athlete is required to attend at least 2 training sessions per week one of which must be a strength day.  The other can be a speed and agility day or another strength day.  An athlete will usually train 2-3 days per week along with their home routine.  Athletes are encouraged to prepare for a 3-6 month program to gain the most out of their training experience.  The athlete’s will re-test in the performance criteria and will re-assess their FMS score at the end of their training package, to determine their improvement level.  The athlete will then be placed in a higher level of training that will challenge them with new and more advanced exercises to continue to improve their strength, power and movement quality.

One On One Sports Performance is the most comprehensive program around. Athletes of all sports will benefit from and enjoy this form of training.  To learn more about our program or to set up an appointment for a performance and musculoskeletal evaluation please contact Stephen Barth, Director of Sports Performance at our Richmond Hill Rd. facility.
